Falcon runners sixth
at Princeton Invitational
by Doug Graves
It's not the size of the dog in the fight, but rather the size of the fight in the dog. Just ask members of the Fenwick High cross country team.
The Falcon boys and girls showed no signs of being intimidated when they faced larger schools during Saturday's Princeton Cross Country Invitational. The Falcon boys, under head coach Don Horn, finished sixth overall behind Lakota East, Colerain, Princeton, St. Xavier and Lakota West.
Friday evening rains stopped just 30 minutes before Saturday morning's event, which was held at the Landmark Christian Campus near Cincinnati. Hilly, soggy and muddy conditions kept most times above average, though Matt Rice of Lakota East blazed the 5K course in 16:49.
Fenwick's Ryan Kolb led his team with a 47th place finish in the varsity race. Teammate Jacob Fedders was right behind in 48th in 21:00. Other Falcon varsity participants included Eric Leyda (52nd), Lance Roman (54th), Kyle Bush (56th), Brandon Borgemenke (58th) and David Mulligan (61st).
In girls JV action, Stephen Hurlbert led the Falcons, finishing 57th in 22:23 while teammate Paul Dainelsons was 66th overall. Other Fenwick competitors in this event included Adam Colley, Patrick Colley, Michael Hurley, Seth Stewart, Maxx Mulligan and Ben Hall. Fenwick finished seventh in this event, which was won by Lakota East.
In the Open run for girls, Fenwick's Elizabeth Brink and Haley Hayek finished 1-2 in a field of 17 runners. Brink won in a time of 22:22 while Hayek crossed the line one second later. Teammates Anna Zearley (10th) and Anna Fink (12th) also competed.
